Ten young Asean researchers to attend Nobel laureate meeting

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Ten young researchers from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand will be participating at the 60th Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau, Germany, this year, according to information from the Jakarta-based ASEAN Secretariat.

The researchers have been selected to attend the meeting from June 17 to July 2, 2010. The interdisciplinary meeting will bring together more than 650 international young researchers and 61 Nobel prize winners from the fields of chemistry, physics, medicine/physiology.This is the second time ASEAN participates at the global scientific convention where great minds come to meet.

Expressing his pleasure at the ASEAN researchers` participation, ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan, said, "Science and technology are critical instruments to help our region develop and increase its competitiveness. By building our human capacity and centres of excellence in science, we will help to foster development and application of innovative technologies that could be translated into tangible benefits, not only for our community, but for the global community."

Gempa 5,7 SR Guncang Melonguane, Sulut

Bandarlampung (ANTARA News) - Gempa berkekuatan 5,7 skala Richter (SR) terjadi, Senin, pukul 06:47 WIB, berpusat pada 175 kilometer Timur Laut Melonguane, Sulawesi Utara (Sulut).

Informasi Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika (BMKG), juga menyebutkan gempa berlokasi 4,90 Lintang Utara-126,95 Bujur Timur tersebut, dengan kedalaman 67 kilometer, tidak berpotensi tsunami.

Pusat gempa juga berada pada 218 kilometer Timur Laut Tahuna, Sulut; 430 kilometer Timur Laut Bitung, Sulut; 446 kilometer Timur Laut Manado, Sulut; dan 2.551 kilometer Timur Laut Jakarta. (T013/K004)

LAPAN planning to launch own satellite

Bantul, Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Aeronautics and Space Agency LAPAN is planning to put its own satellite in orbit this year, a spokesman said.

"Right now we are still making preparations for the launching of the satellite named "Nano" with a rocket. The satellite will weigh less than 10 kilograms," head of LAPAN`s applied technology center, Dr Rika Andiarti, said on the sidelines of an Indonesia Rocket Competition 2010 at Pandansimo beach, Bantul, Yogyakarta, here on Saturday.

She said the "Nano" satellite would be used to monitor temperatures in the atmosphere or air humidity as well as for collecting other small data.

"In the future, we hope, we will be able to launch a bigger satellite for telecommunication and other purposes," she said.
